Water

Water is a precious resource and at Royal Roads we try to conserve every drop. You can help us achieve our conservation goals by taking a few simple steps.

What we’re doing

  • 90% of water used for irrigation is non-potable, from an underground spring on campus.
  • Non-potable water is also used in the microfiber cleaning system.

The Learning and Innovation Centre (LIC) features several sustainable water-use features:

  • Rain water is collected and used for non-potable water needs such as irrigation.
  • Many of the landscaping around the LIC is native vegetation which requires minimal watering.
  • Recycled grey water is used in the toilets.
  • Galleys located on each floor have water bottle filling stations.

What you can do

  • Drink tap water – fill your personal water bottle on campus. Use campus water-spigot refilling stations located in the Habitat Café and in all the LIC galleys. Victoria’s water is clean and perfectly safe to drink.
  • Take shorter, more efficient showers.
  • Turn off water while brushing your teeth, or rinsing a razor while staying on campus.
  • Share your water smart choices with friends, family, and neighbours.
  • Report leaks or drips to the Maintenance office (Phone: 250-391-2524).

Did you know?

  • On Earth Day in 2010, a blind taste test was conducted to see if people could tell the difference between RRU’s tap water and bottle water. The results showed that people prefer tap water over bottled water.
  • Drinking bottled water sends the false message that municipal tap water is unsafe. More than a 1/4 of bottled water comes from municipal sources anyway.
"The development of sustainability is vital to living on this finite planet. Universities have a unique obligation and ability to advance and implement solutions, and model ideas. RRU is particularly well placed for this role given the place sustainability has in the university’s mandate." – Dr Chris Ling, Assistant Professor, School of Environment and Sustainability
