Solar Colwood
Royal Roads University and the City of Colwood have further strengthened their "Green Learning in Action" partnership through the Solar Colwood project.
The three-year federally funded Clean Energy Fund Project (Natural Resources Canada) includes the following goals for Colwood residents and businesses:
- Solar thermal hot water heating - technology to be installed on the roofs of 1000 homes and businesses
- Solar photovoltaic (PV) - demonstration technology to be installed on the Colwood City Fire Hall
- Ductless split heat pumps - air source heat pumps to be installed in electrically heated homes
- Smart Grid/Smart Home technologies - technology put in place to assist homeowners in tracking their energy savings
- Electric vehicle infrastructure (EV) - charging stations to be installed for at home, at work, and 'on the go'.
RRU's primary roll in the project is to provide research that supports program development and implementation, as well as to share its results with others. Through the Office of Sustainability and the School of Environment and Sustainability, students are working on projects that support the collaborative efforts between the City of Colwood the other Solar Colwood partners.
